NOAA Sponsors Southern Louisiana Regional Portfields Initiative, May 2006
Building on the successes of Portfields pilots, NOAA and EPA are working together to bring the Portfields model to Southern Louisiana. On May 23-24, 2006, representatives from nine ports in Louisiana met in New Orleans, LA to kick off the Southern Louisiana Regional Portfields Initiative. The goals of this meeting were to transfer best practices and lessons learned through a Peer-to-Peer exchange between Portfields pilots and Southern Louisiana ports, establish face-to-face contacts with local, state and federal partner agencies to assist in prospective projects, and host discussions on the suite of issues most important to Southern Louisiana ports (more information...)

Portfields Video Released, November 2005
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced on November 2, 2005 the release of the Portfields video, titled Portfields: Charting a Course for Port Revitalization. The video was introduced to a wide audience during the film festival at the Brownfields 2005 conference in Denver, Colorado. The Portfields video highlights the Portfields initiative through visits to the three Pilot Ports (New Bedford, MA; Tampa, FL; and Bellingham, WA) -- briefly touching on their history, their challenges, the highlights of their Portfields experience, and their specific successful approaches and tools used to coordinate port community revitalization.
Brownfields 2005 Marketplace of Ideas
On Thursday, November 3, NOAA and EPA hosted a Portfields Marketplace of Ideas (MOI), a roundtable discussion of lessons learned from the Portfields initiative, at the Brownfields 2005 conference in Denver, Colorado. Representatives from the three Pilot Ports -- the Ports of New Bedford, Tampa, and Bellingham -- discussed their experiences and issues related to port community development with other communities from around the nation. New Bedford Receives a $5 million Commitment to Fund Navigational Dredging, August 2004
A broad-based coalition of federal, state, and local partners gathered on the waterfront in New Bedford on August 5, 2004, to highlight a $5 million commitment from Massachusetts Lt. Governor Kerry Healey to fund navigational dredging of this contaminated harbor. This marks a major success for the Portfields initiative in New Bedford. The state funding will be used to finance removal of sediments contaminated below Superfund levels, providing benefits for port users and enhancing the harbor environment. NOAA, the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, the City of New Bedford, and other partners have worked intensively to develop a streamlined process to enable this complex project to move forward.
New Bedford Receives a $200,000 Cleanup Grant from EPA
The City of New Bedford received a $200,000 grant from the EPA to remove contaminated soil at the former Reliable Truss site on the Acushnet River. The site, a former lumberyard and truss manufacturing center, has soil contaminated with high concentrations of lead. The city plans turn the site into a waterfront park. In 2001, Reliable Truss had all buildings on the property demolished, and then donated the land to the city. "This funding removes a significant hurdle to the development of the park," Mayor Frederick M. Kalisz Jr. said at a press conference held to announce the grant. New Bedford has identified the Reliable Truss cleanup as a priority Portfields project. The Portfields partners will work closely with the city, and state and local partners, in the planning and development of the waterfront park. For more information, contact Rob Neely.
2004 National Brownfields Conference
There were several Portfields activities at this year's National Brownfields Conference, September 20-22, 2004, in St. Louis, Missouri. The three Pilot Ports presented their Portfields projects and first year successes during the well attended Portfields panel. Kickoff Meetings -- Successful!
In Spring 2004, kickoff meetings were held in each of the three Pilot Ports, providing an excellent venue for port representatives and partner agencies to discuss priority Portfields projects. NOAA coordinated and facilitated these meetings to help strengthen partnerships, build awareness of the port’s goals and needs, and begin to identify agency roles, capabilities and resources. Implementation plans will be developed for each of the ports for completing specific Portfields projects in 2004 and beyond. View Portfields FY04 Milestones diagram (pdf, 100KB, 1 page).
