Description
Portfields is a NOAA led federal interagency effort that focuses on the redevelopment of brownfields in port and harbor areas, with emphasis on development of environmentally sound port facilities. NOAA and its federal partners will assist the designated Portfields pilot ports revitalize waterfront areas, improve marine transportation, and protect and restore coastal habitat through brownfields cleanup and reuse... Southern Louisiana Regional Portfields Initiative
Nine ports in the Southern Louisiana have chosen to participate in a regional implementation of the Portfields model. The goal for this intiative is to provide a forum in which these nine ports can discuss innovative methods for tackling traditional port issues. During a Kick-Off meeting at the end of May 2006, the ports will: transfer best practices and lessons learned through a Peer-to-Peer exchange between Portfields pilots and Southern Louisiana ports; establish face-to-face contacts with partner agencies to assist in prospective projects; and host discussions on the suite of specific issues most important to Southern Louisiana ports... Pilot Ports
The Portfields federal agencies selected three pilot ports and will provide targeted resources to assist and expedite the planning and implementation of brownfields cleanup and reuse. The pilots were chosen for their willingness to participate, unique set of needs, commitment to port redevelopment, innovative approaches to waterfront planning and revitalization, and overall value federal assistance would add to the redevelopment effort.
New Bedford, MA - Plans to utilize Portfields designation to implement the New Bedford/Fairhaven Harbor Plan, which includes brownfields reuse, habitat restoration, navigational dredging, and increase public access to the waterfront.
- Port of Tampa, FL - Through Portfields, Tampa seeks to cleanup and redevelop contaminated properties, protect the environmental health of Tampa Bay, and expand local economy.
- Port of Bellingham, WA - Plans to utilize Portfields designation to redevelop contaminated sites, restore critical habitat in Bellingham Bay, and revitalize their waterfront.
